Self Doxing Draft

self- doxing

According to Techopedia.com doxing is a slang word derived from the word "doc.". This means that doxing is simply the search for a persons private documents. Lovink (2012) in What Is Social In Social Media begins her piece by pointing out that the 'next time you're hiring' someone, you should 'forget personality tests' and rather just 'check out the applicants Facebook profile', highlighting that  through doxing applicants can easily be overlooked depending on what their digital identity says about them.

As I found out through my self dox there are many things that an employer may find through my digital identity that they may make assumptions about . A quick google search found my name attached to a birthday message to Nelson Mandela that my grandmother wrote for his 50th birthday as well a contraceptive presentation I did in year 9 for Health on Prezi.com. More elaborative searches  like http://checkusernames.com found all the usernames attached to the username "orianamato".And Furthermore a simple Google Image result finds pictures that date back to 2010. Even more eldritch Websites like http://socialmention.com/ found all the times that the words "oriana" and "mato" were mentioned all over the web. Although almost all redirected sites were irrelevant to me 83 mentions existed.

I believe that it is very eerie that the internet can show a whole external assumption of my personality based on simply googling my name. The idea that http://sleepingtime.org/ can make an estimation on a persons sleeping time based on their twitter posts I believe is almost an invasion of privacy and simply very creepy. Lovink (2012) ends her piece What Is Social In Social Media by calling out the social as 'disruptive' and filled with 'unknown' and 'unwanted agenda'. I think we should keep this in mind as not only can employers, associate's and friends find out almost everything they need to know about someone using the internet but they can assume and surmise a person's being through their digital identity.

Mind Map Draft

My digital Identity

Through self doxing I realised that my digital profile is very unorganised. The information I collated into a mind map  from Google, GoogleImages,  http://checkusernames.com, http://DuckDuckGo.com, http://socialmention.com/, http://sleepingtime.org/ and my personal profiles on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr and Twitter have no emphasis on looking attractive and professional to an employer and rather display 'irrelevant fluff' as Lovink's 2012 "What's Social In Social Media" explains.

I agree with Ling's (2016)  "Be the Innovators"  that the process of mind mapping enhanced my 'left and right brain cognitive skills'. This is because although my online identity was cluttered, I had the ability to organise my online information into specific ideas that grouped together through mind mapping. I was able to add dimension and use my full creative potential. This allowed me to explore my self doxing material more insightfully and critically. I found that there is definitely a gap in my online identity in a professional sense. I would like to work in the advertising industry and for that to occur I have to first, sell the brand that is my self. I believe I am blessed that my name is unique as this allows for differentiation however my online profile, specifically through the use of social media, could be categorised as  a "typical teenagers".

The idea of multi dimensional thinking proposed by Ling (2016)  in my mind map granted me the ability to first display my self doxing material then look for words that are associated with that concept. For example the idea that someone can track a person's sleeping habits reminded me of Lovink's (2015) idea that we are 'precarious labour' when posting online as this information is collectively studied, collated and sold. These two ideas occurred to me because of their shared association with the issue of privacy. I would not have been able to delve that deep into this information without the use of multi dimensional thinking/ mind mapping.  Mind mapping also particularly helped me when I asked myself what strategies I need to introduce to improve my online identity. I asked myself questions like would I hire a person if I saw this? What would I like to see? What could I show my children one day without being embarrassed? In order to ignite a discussion in my head.

Lovink's (2015) "What's Social In Social Media" emphasises that Facebook and similar sites like twitter urge us to create irrelevant fluff by encouraging us to immediately  'burp out' any 'thought.. Right now- regardless of its quality' and share it with our "friends". A Facebook status from 2013 that reads 'on the bus' demonstrates that I indeed follow Lovink's theory of immaterial ideas being shared on social media sites. Furthermore, the 8 likes that I received from this status  demonstrate that this theory crosses over to my Facebook acquaintances who believed this statement was worthy of a "like".

Lovink's concept that The Social is leading society into 'a state of stupor' obsessed with finding the newest app or social network before 'leaving it behind- abandoning' it also resonates with my online identity as a easy Google search found many forgotten  online transcripts including a health presentation on condoms and a Myspace page I had in primary school which in the least, is very embarrassing.

Lovink's  piece also  highlighted that employers have moved away from traditional screening of potential employees. They are 'forget(ting) personality tests' and rather moving towards 'check(ing) out an applicants Facebook profile'.

This means that the unprofessional and cluttered nature of my online identity will deem me unemployable in industry.  Thus, my first call of action is to develop and maximise my online self. Some strategies I could use to improve  my online identity and personal brand is by first deleting unnecessary online associations or personal information. I could than create a website or blog that is updated regularly or create an online folio that exhibits my industry skills. To do this I this could write for my school publication, take an internship or interview those in professional  communications  then post these documents online.

News Story Draft

An attack on a 29 year old woman  from behind by a man at 1.30am on Oxford St has shocked  the city of Melville. The public is outraged  that this has even occurred as government funding was given to the council to ensure the city of Melville's safety.

The woman, a tourist was admitted into St Vincents hospital and is now in a stable condition. Police Acting Detective Chief Inspector Sue Ellison has said that the 'young woman showed great presence of mind in a terrifying situation' and that 'all Victorians should feel safe on our streets.'

The State Government, as minister Kristi explains, 'are doing everything we (they) can to improve safety on all the streets for all Victorians, and councils must do their bit. She puts blame on the Melville Council 'who have stalled, delayed and procrastinated' on  installing the state funded $250,000 CCTV cameras that could improve the safety of citizens in Melville substantially.

Press Release Draft

The failure to ensure the CCTV cameras in Melville situation has created great backlash for the City of Melville.

The abduction and murder of a woman 2 years ago has contributed to the criticism especially after a woman was attacked 2 days ago.

The City Of Melville were granted $250,000 to have the cameras up and operational however failed

Mayor Nguyen however has said that this is not her fault and Bureaucratic forces stood in their way.

However she says that by November 17 they will be up and operational, as public safety is their highest priority
